As part of 10th Anniversary celebrations, The Carleton is proud to (finally) welcome back Matthew Barber on Monday, May 14th. Very special guest Joshua Hyslop will be the opener. Show time is 8 PM and tickets are $25 advanced or $30 at the door.

Matthew Barber returns to The Carleton as his newest album – Phase Of The Moon – is released on May 4th. Barber is a two-time Juno nominee, has sold over 100 thousand albums worldwide, 10 million streams and earned countless praise for his work. He’s also a favourite of ours and it’s been waaaaay too long since he’s been on our stage. We’re super-happy he’ll be in town during our 10th anniversary in May, it’s only fitting…

The performances that make up the new record were captured over three days in the historic Almonte Town Hall in eastern Ontario, with its ghosts, high ceilings and Steinway grand piano setting the scene for the recording.  Starting with the solo vocal and piano or vocal and guitar as the centre, the tracks were built outwards and took on different shapes as other instruments were added at Friesen’s studio in Almonte, as well as back in Toronto where the exquisite string parts were arranged and performed by Drew Jurecka. The record was thoughtfully mixed by Darryl Neudorf (Blue Rodeo, Neko Case, Sarah McLachlan) at his barn in Mono, Ontario, and the album art was created by Toronto artist Heather Goodchild.

Joshua Hyslop was born in Saskatoon but now resides in Abbotsford, BC and is signed to Vancouver’s Nettwerk Records. He specializes in an atmospheric, soul-searching blend of chamber pop and indie folk. Citing influences like Iron & Wine, Mumford & Sons, Ryan Adams, Wilco and Bon Iver, he has released two EPs, Cold Wind (2011) and Living & Dying (2015) and three albums, Where The Mountain Meets The Valley (2011), In Deepest Blue and his latest Echos (released in February 2018), all to great critical acclaim.
