Well, here’s a night for Hip fans if ever we’ve seen one! We’re hosting a book reading and interview with Michael Barclay, author of the national best-seller, The Never-Ending Present: The Story of Gord Downie and the Tragically Hip, to be followed by a night of live music with Dennis Ellsworth’s The Fabulously Rich at The Carleton on Saturday, October 13th. The reading and interview (by Dalhousie musicologist Ryan McNutt) will start at 9 PM with TFR hitting the stage at 10 PM. Tickets are $20 advanced or $25 at the door.

The Fabulously Rich is a live tribute to The Tragically Hip. The band formed in 2016 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. The idea came about when the news broke that Gord Downie had been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. The original idea was to reunite a group of old friends, who began their music careers in a high school rock n roll band known as Adam’s Eve and present a tribute to one of the bands they all loved, and most frequently covered in their sets. When only 4 of the 5 members could participate, the band recruited TJ Lewis to round out the line up.

The Fabulously Rich has come together to pay tribute to this monumental Canadian band, while at the same time, helping to raise money for the Downie Wenjack fund, making donations for each show they play. Dennis Ellsworth – Lead vocals, guitar Mike Montigny – Bass Trevor Campbell – Lead guitar TJ Lewis – Rhythm guitar Greg Stapleton – Drums, backing vocals

The book you’ve been waiting for: The Never-Ending Present is the first comprehensive biography of the Tragically Hip, telling the full story from their first basement practices to their tragic and triumphant final tour.
Michael Barclay is a co-author of Have Not Been the Same and wrote extensively about the Hip’s final tour for Maclean’s in the summer and fall of 2016. This unauthorized book draws from more than 80 new interviews with managers, producers, peers and friends to tell the story not only of this band, but of many bands: cover bands, opening bands, aging bands, Canadian bands. A story of poetry and performance, of dealing with disease and of seeking reconciliation, of dance and its disappearance. A story about how this country sees itself in song and otherwise. A story about a show watched by 11 million Canadians, and 33 years of reasons why all those people watched in the first place.
As a special treat for this Halifax book launch, Michael will be selling The Never-Ending Present: The Story of Gord Downie and the Tragically Hip for $25! Christmas is coming, folks…
