Paper Beat Scissors (the brainchild of Tim Crabtree) brings a very special show with a six piece chamber music ensemble to The Carleton to kick off the Halifax Urban Folk Festival. Joining him on the bill are Toronto’s young buzz band (and July Talk’s Leah Fay’s new fave) Moscow Apartment and our own modern-day beat poet, Tanya Davis.

Brad Roberts (Crash Test Dummies) & The Halifax All Stars + Tim Baker/T. Thomason/Lilly Hiatt
For nearly 30 years, Brad Roberts has been “one of the most famous voices in Canadian rock and roll” (CBC). As the frontman for the JUNO Award-winning group Crash Test Dummies, Roberts underpinned the group’s biggest hits such as “Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm” and “Superman’s Song” with his unmistakable timbre and delivery. He has since struck out on his own for performances that include a healthy a dose of fan-favourites as well as new solo material. Brad will be accompanied by the HFX All Stars and the show will kick off with the Opening Songwriters’ Circle featuring Lilly Hiatt, Tim Baker, and T. Thomason.

Best known as the driving force behind Hey Rosetta!, Tim Baker is a wonderfully imaginative songwriter, a thoughtful poet, a playful arranger, and a technically profound musician. Playing all over the world at festivals, stadiums, theatres, and clubs for more than 13 years, the band earned multiple JUNO nominations, a spot on the Polaris Music Prize shortlist, and a slew ofEast Coast Music Awards. Since Hey Rosetta!’s hiatus in 2017, Tim Baker has taken his writing back to its roots, performing solo as he prepares his next album. Tim will be accompanied by the HFX All Stars and the show will kick off with the Opening Songwriters’ Circle featuring Brad Roberts, Lilly Hiatt, and Mick Davis (of The Novaks).

Based in Nashville, Tennessee, Lilly Hiatt has quickly added her name to a steadfast list of revered songwriters. Her latest album, Trinity Lane, was produced by Michael Trent ofShovels & Rope and named one of the 40 Best Country and Americana Albums of 2017by Rolling Stone. The record combines her Americana roots and the influence of her gritty influences to create a sound that fires along “with ample sass and unbridled attitude.” Lilly will be accompanied by the HFX All Stars and the show will kick off with the Opening Songwriters’ Circle featuring Tim Baker, Brad Roberts, and Dustin Bentall.
