The Halifax Urban Folk Festival, after over ten years of trying, is finally thrilled to announce that Rhett Miller from The Old 97’s and a renowned solo artist, will play The Carleton with the Halifax All Star band – along with an opening songwriters’ circle involving two-time 2024 Juno winner Aysanabee, Hearts Of Kin and Jon Cornwall – on Friday, October 4th. Show time is 8 PM and tickets (while they last) are $72.50 + HST.

Artistic Director Mike Campbell: “If you are a music fan within striking distance of Halifax and are not in the hospital, or getting married, or something equally dire, you would have to be actually (and by actually, I mean certifiably) insane to miss this show.”

Rhett Miller has released 22 albums with his band The Old 97’s and 9 solo albums. He also teaches and somehow finds time to write for magazines like The Atlantic. He still tours with his band and performs solo; one of the reasons it’s taken over 10 years to get him to Halifax since he first told us he was not only willing, but wanted to come. There’s just too much information for a concise bio, so if you don’t already know who he is (and really, you should), I highly recommend reading his personal Wikipedia listing HERE and the one for his band HERE.

The Songwriters Circle

Aysanabee made history on Mar 23, 2024, as the first ever Indigenous Artist to win the JUNO Awards for Alternative Album of the Year and the coveted Songwriter of the year, for Here and Now. He followed up the wins with a memorable performance on the awards broadcast with a tribute to Robbie Robertson and Gordon Lightfoot alongside Allison Russell, William Prince, Julian Taylor, Shawnee Kish, Logan Staats, and the Rainbow Coalition.

Hearts Of Kin are sisters Danielle MacDonald and Shellie Ann Tobin. The singer songwriters have been capturing audiences with their sweet sibling harmonies and signature slide guitar. Well known for their soulful songwriting, the darling duo’s style has been flavoured by the early influences of Sheryl Crow, Jewel, The Chicks and the late great John Prine.

Jon Cornwall is not only The Carleton’s head tech, he’s also a seasoned folk and Canadiana artist whose music resonates with heartfelt storytelling and authentic melodies. Growing up with a piano at his fingertips, Jon’s musical journey took a pivotal turn at the age of 15 when he picked up the guitar, spurred by a friendly rivalry with his brother. This decision paved the way for a rich career in music.
