In what’s becoming a semi-annual tradition during the Halifax International Busker Festival, Australians OKA! bring their infectious brand of reggae, beats and world music to The Carleton for a full show (not the abbreviated busking variety) on Sunday, July 31st. Show time will be 9 PM and admission is $20 at the door. Local DJ/producer SNUG, also known as Adam McLellan, will open the show with some beats of his own.
Embracing the future without losing sight of the past, OKA draws upon their indigenous connection to place and country to create their signature feel good Australian earth sound, an irresistible blend of influences spanning house, big beat, reggae-dub, Roots, Jazz and world music. A mashup of dance & downtempo electro beats marinated in the mystic spiritual traditions of the Dreamtime.
“Try to imagine Bob Marley meets Stevie Wonder via the chemical brothers, on acid, playing in a steaming rainforest with a didgeridoo and you are getting close”
Snug, AKA Adam McLellan, has always been fascinated by the intersection of music and technology. He was introduced to electronic music at a young age through a combination of community radio and the BBS art/demo scene and quickly found a place in Ottawa’s rave scene as a DJ and promoter. By the early 2000s he had shared the stage with national and international talent such as Total Science, Ray Keith, AK1200, Mistress Barbara, Angel Alanis, Mark EG and DAVE the Drummer. Adam’s been in Halifax since 2007.
