We are proud to host Mel Farrimond‘s Songwriters’ Circle – with Ian Sherwood, David Muise, Leona Burkey & special guests – in support of Parkinson Society Nova Scotia, at The Carleton on Wednesday, July 2nd. Show time is 7 PM and tickets for this very worthy cause are $20 + HST.
Mel Farrimond is a Scottish-born singer-songwriter, whose introspective folk songs, heartfelt, intelligent lyrics and catchy melodies have earned her a loyal following. A Nova Scotia resident, Mel has performed in Atlantic Canada, Ontario, the US and the UK. A few performance highlights include a ‘tweener spot on the mainstage at Stanfest, the Harmony Bazaar Festival, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and the Folk Alliance in Memphis. Mel has also produced and hosted countless song circles, including the Songbird (formerly Bluebird) North Songwriter Showcases in Halifax for the Songwriters’ Association of Canada, and Songs from the Steeple, a song circle on the Eastern Shore. Mel’s full-length album, Through the Darkness, is a journey from the dark to the light, full of exquisite songs both haunting and hopeful, sung in a voice at once strong and vulnerable. Mel is currently working on songs for her EP, set for release in 2024.
Leona Burkey is a versatile singer-songwriter/contemporary roots artist from with a bell-clear voice, inventive guitar attack and seasoned, easy-going stage presence. Leona’s penchant for spontaneously crafting shows as she goes charms and disarms audiences into a joyful musical conversation in the Cape Breton troubadour style. A MusicNS and ECMA nominee, her latest record “Groundrush” offers up a hopeful soundtrack for struggling optimists and is “making mom-rock a thing” according to the Coast. Leona is a long-time tub-thumper for neuro-related causes and loves a good benefit show.
David Muise is a singer-songwriter originally from New Waterford, Cape Breton. In his younger formidable years he followed his father Yogi around as he performed with the Men of the Deeps. Those types of experiences solidified David’s love and passion for songs that told stories. With other musical influences like Harry Chapin, John Prine, and James Taylor it is no wonder that his songs take the listener in a journey. Since the release of his debut solo CD called “The Journey” he has been busy playing at various charity events, Jamborees, and songwriters’ circles, which included playing on one of the Stanfest stages.
Guitar, saxophone, huge songwriting and a voice that won him a Canadian Folk Music Award for Contemporary Singer, Ian Sherwood Brings The Light to every stage he stands on. A born story teller and a constant creator, his music dances the line between folk and pop. His live performances thrive on intimacy. Whether it’s a theatre show or large festival stage, his persona is irresistible and completely destroys fourth walls.
