In association with Marine Drive Talent Management, the Halifax Urban Folk Festival is pleased to announce this year’s participants in our annual Youth Songwriters Circle at The Carleton featuring 10 young aspiring musicians, on Sunday, October 5th. Doors open at noon and the show starts at 1:30 PM. Tickets are $20 +HST.

For this matinee, The Carleton is permitted to welcome minors over the age of 4 having a meal and accompanied by their parent or guardian.  If underage attendees are part of your party, please make a note when purchasing tickets or drop us a line at reservations@thecarleton.ca.

Alora Ells is a 15 year old singer/songwriter from Sheffield Mills, in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia.  She started singing in church at an early age.  Alora is already making a name for herself, channeling her love for music into her own songwriting.   Her sound blends the emotion of folk music with the story telling tradition of country.  A young artist to watch, carrying a legacy of music forward with her own unique voice. Anna Sampson is a 12 year old singer/songwriter from Head of Jeddore. She plays the ukelele and has been learning to play the guitar and piano. She loves to explore different genres of music, and she performs in musical theater.

Caleb Ross Malaidack is a 14-year-old musician from Eastern Passage who has been playing guitar for eight years and writing his own songs for the past four. He draws inspiration from folk, bluegrass, country, and indie music, blending these styles into his own unique sound. Caleb hones his skills through guitar and voice lessons at Long & McQuade, and regularly plays within his community by performing weekly at the local Buffalo Club. Chloe Betts is a fifteen year old singer/songwriter from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Chloe has been singing as well as performing for the past 8 years, and recently started songwriting and playing the guitar. 

Edie Hunter is the stage name for a 16-year-old songwriter born in Minnesota, who has grown up in Nova Scotia for most of her life. Her music is described as pop-indie, although she is heavily inspired by the stories and melodies of country and folk from her youth. In her songs she uses catchy melodies and thoughtful lyrics to express her thoughts and struggles as a teenager. She is currently recording her first EP.

Isabelle Foster is a 14 year-old Canadian-Italian singer songwriter who uses her voice and talents on the ukulele, keyboard and guitar to create heartfelt relatable and engaging songs that capture the emotional realities of growing up as a young woman today. Having also lived in Thailand, Malaysia, and Fiji, Isabel brings a unique global perspective to her music. Linktr.ee/isabellefostermusic

Lily Milne-Gunn is a young songwriter hailing from Centreville, Nova  Scotia. With tender lyrical insight and a beautifully spare, intimate style, she gracefully blends contemporary folk with poetic sensibility. Exploring themes like identity, nature, and quiet emotional moments, a “rising voice on the Nova Scotia scene,” Lily’s performances are noted for being “intimate, honest, and beautifully spare. Noah Tan Rafuse is a 15 year old actor/musician from Kentville, Nova Scotia. Making music in his bedroom whenever he gets the chance. He currently has multiple albums out under the aliases “Motel Suicide” and “Dead Oak”. Where he blends and experiments with many genres, from indie folk, to lo-fi pop and dream rock. Olivia MacPhail is 14 years old and loves to sing whenever she gets the chance, whether it’s at home, at school, or on a stage. When she’s not singing, she enjoys swimming, snowboarding, paddling, and playing with her dog Obi. She is excited to share her music with you!

Taryn Munro is 16 years old from Lawrencetown and has performed at a variety of festivals and events over the last few years. She has always loved singing from a very young age and started writing songs four years ago. She’s thankful for this opportunity to be a part of HUFF.
