Kick off your Pride week with this special edition of Dyke Night Live. We’re challenging six local queer artists to select one song from a sapphic artist (eg. KD Lang, Tracy Chapman & Tegan and Sara) that helped shape their songwriting and musical style, and one original song. Constant Craving is set to be a magical queer musical experience you won’t want to miss!
Julia Cunningham is a singer and songwriter from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Julia is a master of the guitar and, combined with vocals, creates her distinct indie folk-pop sound. Releasing her debut EP album (Dive Deep) in 2023, a 5-song collection of thoughtfully created and performed music, which is also personal and relatable. Continuing to produce popular new singles such as The Long Run and Sea Legs, Julia is becoming an emerging artist on the East Coast whose fanbase continues to grow to this day.
Salt Lamp is Katie Wayne (she/her) and Jaime Burnet (she/her), two long-time DIY Halifax musicians crafting songs of queer and trans joy and fury as celebration, incantation, and armour. With backgrounds in pop, folk, punk, and electronic music, SALT LAMP has created a compelling and mercurial sound, sometimes a soft sigh, sometimes a chest-thumping triumph, sometimes an ethereal spell, yet always anchored by their warm and heartfelt voices. Their forthcoming debut album, I Dreamed You Loaned Me Your Telekinetic Powers, is a journal of the sweetness, anxiety, beauty and ferocity of queer love in a dangerous time.
The intricate harmonies of sisters Moira and Claire first rang out from the backseat of the family car on cross-country road trips when they were kids. They’ve come a long way since, but the strong sibling bond of their musical chemistry remains the same. Their songwriting is full of subtle sophistication, perfectly unexpected moments, and hard-won lyrical wisdom. The clever simplicity they’re able to draw out of life’s complexities makes for honest, intimate, and relatable songs that have connected with thousands of people globally.
Adina is an R&B/Folk Artist with soul soothing vocals and heart lulling lyrics. Hailing from North Preston, Adina gained her love of music growing up surrounded by her musical Country/Gospel singing Family. Adina has received the ANSMA Portia White Youth award 2021, and the Creative Nova Scotia Portia White Protege Award 2022. Her most notable performances being during Nova Scotia Music Week, Crescendo Festival, and most recently the Romerias de Mayo Festival in Holguin Cuba, ADINA’s story is only just beginning.
Averi Chandler is a country-soul artist known for a Stapleton-meets-childers–style sound, rooted in soul while drawing inspiration from all genres. Their music blends gospel, country, soul, blues, and anything else they can get their hands on, creating an open, genre-blending musical experience. Originally from Sicily, Italy, Averi began making music on TikTok during the pandemic, collaborating with Italian artists and building connections online after relocating to Halifax.
